Music Lessons help Improve a Child's Mind & Behaviour

A recent study commissioned by the UK Government has shown that learning a musical instrument whilst studying at school improves a child’s behaviours, memory and intelligence. This year is the first year that the Government has launched a National Year of Music. Professor Susan Hallam who works at the Institute of Education for the University of London analysed various scores and tests on behalf of researchers’ studies on the benefits of music to children. The discovery led researchers to believe that learning a musical instrument actually enlarges the left hand side of your brain which leads to the human being able to remember a fifth more information than someone who hadn’t decided to learn a musical instrument. This research was commissioned by the Government in an effort to try and get more children to start learning musical instruments and partake in extra curricular activities outside of school. Eventually, the Government does want to try and implement an incentive for kids aged 7 to 11 to try and start to learn a musical instrument by 2011. Apparently, music lessons increase a students IQ by seven points compared to 4.3 points for drama lessons. Other similar tests have been run in America and they have also found that playing a musical instrument such as Electric Guitars, Digital Pianos & Grand Pianos helps improve a child’s behaviours and commitment to school. This is due to the fact the when a child works in a smaller group there is a certain level of trust respect and above all else, compromise. Especially when a student is young, music makes a major contribution to the development of self-identity and is seen as a valuable source of support especially when young people at school are feeling troubled and lonely. It gives them something they can feel happy about. Jamie Cullum has been an active supporter of this campaign and has been taking regular visits to schools inthe neighbouring area.

An instrument store gives a 10% discount to all students off the original cost of an instrument. During a back to school sale an additional 15% is taken off the discounted price. Julie, a student at the local high school, purchases a flute for $306. How much did it originally cost?

Best Answer...

Answer:

400 x .10 =360
360 x .15 =306

The original price was $400

The mistake the other people were making is they were adding the 2 percentages together, but instructions actually say 15% off the discounted price. So you have to do it seperately.
